I'm going to be honest and tell you everything you should know about the Google Chomecast.
First, I'll go through the positives then into the negatives.. these are my own experiences..
Cheap, last time I checked, it was $29.99 USD. You can get it from other places around the world like your nearest tech joint, I would imagine it would be around the $40 mark from other places.
Turns your non-smart TV into a smart TV that can be controlled from your smart phone or Google chrome browser (needs the extension/add-on)
Runs at 1080p Full HD which is pretty much the standard these days when buying a TV, the low end TV's have slower refresh rates like 50hz which is pretty bad, if you are looking at getting a TV, make sure its 100hz. The 50hz models give a blur on the screen when there are fast moving objects.
Depending where you are situated, your geography location might prevent you from using most of its beneficial features like Netflix and the like, there are DNS services that can get you around that but I believe they are $10 a month which are in addition to the Netflix charges. Getting to the Netflix website is near impossible from outside the US as they automatically detect your IP address from outside us which is why you need a DNS service to get around that.
I'm not sure if I got myself a dud, but mine would stop responding every once 2 weeks or so and would need a reboot, and a few times it needed a reboot, it would forget the WiFi settings and it would come to the setup screen. It does automatic updates so I don't think my cast was not up to date.
At the time, I had bad WiFi, so its possible the cast was trying to continuously reconnect causing it to freeze up.
In my opinion, if you've got a non-smart tv, its a good investment for only 30 bucks.
